Both Pio Nono Avenue and College Street are located in downtown Macon, Georgia in Bibb County. Both bridges, vital for the freight-rail transportation network, needed expansion to allow for double stacked rail cars. Due to their location in heavily traveled areas, a design-build technique was used to accelerate construction, meaning demolition and rebuild on both took less than six months. The College Street bridge, which stands close to the campus of Mercer University, was considered a historic landmark. Unfortunately, due to its structural state, could not be preserved. Luckily, bricks from the archway were salvaged and are being used in a nearby green space to be enjoyed by residents. This project has recently been rewarded the Georgia Partnership for Transportation Quality (GPTQ) Preconstruction Design Award in the Spring of 2021.
